Question: Can I get opportunities to earn PDUs via giving presentations or lectures?
 Answer: Earning PDUs by giving presentations is a fantastic way not only to earn PDUs, but also to stay involved in the project management profession and networking with your fellow project managers. I personally love to stand in front of an audience, talking about project management topics and exchanging ideas with the audience.
PMI recognizes two categories in which you can earn PDUs as a speaker and they are quite straightforward:
Your first option is Category 2C: Speaker/Teacher on project management topics at a conference, symposium, workshop or formal course. In this category you will receive 10 PDUs for each presentation or training that you give at such an event. I have earned these type of PDUs by teaching a live PMP exam prep workshop for my local PMI chapter. Ask your local chapter if they offer such a course and can use your assistance.
Your second option is Category 2D: Speaker on a project management topic at a PMI component meeting. In this category you will earn 5 PDUs for each presentation. It's interesting to note, that if you give the same presentation at a conference you will earn 10 PDUs, but if you give it at a PMI dinner meeting you will "only" earn 5 PDUs. I guess PMI wants us to try and participate in formal conferences rather than travel from one PMI dinner meeting to the next with a cookie cutter presentation.
As always: If you do give a presentation for which you want to claim PDUs, make sure that you keep records. You should always print out the agenda of the event and keep any marketing materials around your speaking engagement just in case that you are audited by PMI.

Title: PMI's PDU Secrets

Short description/summary: A project manager has to be many things. To name just a few, a PM has to be a great communicator, a leader, a visionary, and be able to both build and inspire the team. First and foremost, however, a project manager has to be proactive. We employ strategies to plan the future in order to proactively minimise risk on our projects so that we can deliver on time and on budget.
Why then is it that when November comes around you can hear a collective groan rise from the worldwide community of PMPs as they ask, where they could quickly get 20, 30 or even 40 or more PDUs before the year is through? Is this simply a case of the cobbler's children having no shoes? No. I think that this is an acute case of the PMP community not even trying to proactively understand the PMI's recertification requirements.
