Question: What is the maximum number of PDUs I can claim in each of the various categories over the next three years?
Answer: If you are new to earning PDUs then it will at first be quite confusing to understand the 18 categories, sub-categories and sub-sub-categories in which you can earn PDUs. Luckily, only 3 of them have a maximum, so that makes it a bit easier.
The first thing that I recommend you do is go to http://www.pmi.org/ccrs, log in to your account and then click on the "Print PDU Category Limits" link. This will open up a 3-page PDF document for you that lists the maximum earnable PDUs for each category. In this document you will see that there is "No maximum" for category 3 PDUs, which means that you could theoretically earn 60 PDUs in this category to cover all your needs as a PMP. You will also see that category 2D (speaking at a PMI dinner meeting) will give you 5 PDUs each time you speak. That means if you speak at 3 dinner meetings you have earned 3 x 5 = 15 PDUs because there is no maximum.
Here are the 3 categories which have a maximum number of PDUs that you can earn in your 3-year cycle:
* Category 2H (working as a PM): Maximum 15 PDUs per cycle
* Category 2SDL (Self-directed learning): Maximum 15 PDUs per cycle
* Category 5 (Volunteering): Maximum 20 PDUs per cycle across category 5A, 5B and 5C
None of the others have any maximum - so earn away.
In conclusion: don't worry too much about the maximum you can earn in each category because the online CCRS website will keep track of it for you. If you don't remember simply log in to the website and look at your current cycle details to see if you might be maxed out.
