Question: I have heard that PMI is changing the PDU Categories in 2011. What do you know about this?
Answer: You are correct. PMI is indeed changing the CCR PDU Categories. Starting March 1st, 2011 the new categories will take effect. Here is the information that PMI has published so far:
The good news is that the three-year renewal cycle, the number of PDUs required to maintain your credential and the re-certification fee will remain the same. So no change here.
Here are some of the key changes to the program:
- Simplification to the CCR category structure, reducing the number of categories from 18 to 6
-
Ensuring that all categories use the rule that one hour of learning activity is equivalent to one PDU
-
Expanding the categories to include Web 2.0 learning opportunities
-
Adding limits on certain categories to require that all credential holders pursue project management continuing education as part of maintaining their credential
Not much more is known at this time.
What does all of this mean to you? Well... until March of 2011 nothing will change and you can continue to earn and report your PDUs as before. Starting March 2011 the new structure and policies take effect, so you're going to have to understand what they are and how they work.
The PDU Insider will help you make this transition.
We will review & analyze the new rules and to keep you updated. We'll make sure that you know what's coming your way.

Title: The ABC of PDUs (Professional Development Units)
Written by: Conrado Morlan, PgMP
As a PMI credential holder you must accrue a minimum number of PDUs to maintain your certification status in a tree year cycle. PDUs are classified in different categories described in the PDU category Caps and Rules.
The Certified Associate in Project Management ® (CAPM®) is the only credential that does not need to accrue PDUs. This credential last for five years and it expires. The CAMP® credential holder may decide to re-take the CAMP® exam or to pursue another PMI credential.
