Understanding The PDU Category Structure And Policies
If you are a certified Project Management Professional (PMP)®, then you know that the acronym PDU stands for Professional Development Unit. Every PMP needs to earn 60 PDUs every 3 years in order to keep his or her certification. Why? The idea behind PDUs is simple: the Project Management Institute wants every PMP to continuously learn. Just like doctors or pilots who have to take classes regularly and practice new skills in order to keep their license, PMI wants credential holders to learn new project management skills so that we can be the best project managers possible.

Question:
PDU requirement is changing effective December 2015 for renewal. I am PMP since last month and If I plan to earn all the 60 PDU's before December 2015, will I be filling in the requirement based on the current PDU requirement or changed requirement?

I read an article where it says the new requirement is effective for certain certification expiry dates earlier or before, which is leaving me confused.

I am in process of starting my ITIL Foundation certification which would get me 30 PDU's. What catageory would that PDU fall in?

Self-directed learning is a Category C activity that covers a wide range of topics. Professional Development Units gained this way are an easy and cheap way to top up your total. Self-study is something that can fit in around your other activities – and you may even find yourself doing it as part of your day job!
